Adolescent Therapy
Adolescence is a time of significant change and development, and it can feel challenging for both young people and their parents or caregivers. During the transition from childhood to adulthood, adolescents are developing greater independence while also navigating emotional, social and psychological changes.
This stage of life often involves thinking more about the future, including education, career, relationships, identity and independence. Alongside this, young people may experience increased emotional intensity, uncertainty or pressure, which can feel overwhelming at times.
How adolescent therapy can help
Adolescent therapy offers a safe, supportive and confidential space for young people to explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences. Therapy supports adolescents to better understand themselves, develop coping strategies and make sense of the changes they are experiencing.
During this period, young people often explore different possibilities as they begin to form a clearer sense of identity. Therapy helps adolescents navigate this process of self-discovery, supporting them to understand what feels right for them, while building confidence, emotional awareness and resilience.
Our approach to working with adolescents
At our practice, adolescent therapy is collaborative, compassionate and developmentally appropriate. Therapy is tailored to the individual, drawing on evidence-based and integrative approaches, including CBT-informed work, emotional regulation strategies and relational approaches, depending on what is most helpful.
We work at a pace that feels comfortable for the young person, with care taken to ensure therapy feels respectful, supportive and engaging. Where appropriate, creative or practical approaches may also be used to support expression and communication.
Working with parents and caregivers
While therapy is centred on the adolescent, we recognise the importance of the wider family context. Where appropriate, we work alongside parents or caregivers, offering support, guidance and shared understanding, while also respecting the young person’s need for privacy and autonomy.
This balanced approach helps ensure that the young person feels supported both within therapy and in their everyday life.
