Attachment Therapy
Attachment therapy offers a supportive, relationship-focused space to strengthen connection, trust and emotional security between a child and their caregiver(s). This approach recognises that children’s emotional wellbeing is closely linked to the quality of their early relationships, and that difficulties are best understood and supported within this relational context.
At our practice, attachment therapy is collaborative, compassionate and tailored to the individual child and family. We work closely with both the child and their caregiver(s), taking time to understand the unique needs, experiences and patterns within each relationship.
How the work takes place
The therapeutic relationship provides a safe and non-judgemental space in which relational patterns can gently emerge and be explored. Sessions are informed by attachment theory and may incorporate Theraplay®-informed techniques, which are based on the natural, healthy interactions that support secure attachment between caregivers and children.
These interactions are often playful, engaging and enjoyable, helping to build connection while supporting emotional regulation, communication and a sense of safety. The work is always adapted to the child’s developmental stage, sensory needs and the family’s circumstances.
Areas of focus
Theraplay®-informed work focuses on four key relational qualities that support healthy caregiver–child relationships:
- Structure– providing predictability, safety and clear boundaries
- Engagement– supporting shared attention, connection and enjoyment
- Nurture– offering care, comfort and emotional safety
- Challenge– encouraging confidence, curiosity and resilience in a supportive way
Through shared experiences and guided interaction, caregivers are supported to respond more confidently to their child’s emotional and behavioural needs, while children are supported to feel more secure, understood and connected.
